The MacBook Air
Posted Jan 15th 2008 11:59AM by Nilay Patel Apple just announced the .16-inch thin MacBook Air — a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. Just like the iPhone, you’ll be able to pan around, pinch to zoom, and rotate with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple got the size down by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that’s in the iPod classic, but you’ll be able to order a 64GB SSD as an option. The Air eschews optical media, but there’s a separate external you can snag for $99 and Apple’s also announced a feature called Remote Disk that’ll let the Air get data off the optical drive in any PC or Mac running the Remote Disk software. Philips Patents Expressive Pen that Writes Out Your Mood [Patent]
The designers at Philips have been busy “emotionizing” their products, what with the cuddly Aurea TVs, and their emotional reactive jewelry. Now they have got designs on the humble pen, with a patented invention for a writing implement that actually records the mood of the writer while they’re writing stuff. Its finger contact sensors detect give-aways like heartbeat, skin temperature and the pressure you exert on pen and paper, which it then uses to actually morph the look of the ink stroke: While a biro may be a fantastic at scribbling notes, Philips thinks that they can actually increase your self-expression with this device. Apple unveils the Apple TV, take 2
Posted Jan 15th 2008 11:55AM by Nilay Patel Apple just admitted that the first Apple TV didn’t quite work out — so it’s back with a new model that can access iTunes directly, and streams movies from the new rental store in both DVD quality and HD with 5.1 surround. HD rentals cost a dollar more than SD content — $3.99 and $4.99, and they’ll sync back to your computer as well. The YouTube selection has also been expanded to 50M videos, there’s now Flickr support in addition to .mac, and what’s more, the entire UI has been revamped. The new single menu interface offers quick search of all available titles, and includes access to 600 TV shows that are available for $1.99, as well as your iTunes library and HD podcasts. Microsoft Sees Red With New Zune
You didn’t think Microsoft was just going to let Apple own this news cycle, did you? Nope, the Redmond Beast makes it own claim for your attention with a new Zune edition — the well-reviewed 80GB Zune 2, now in red with custom graphics for Valentine’s Day and pre-loaded with a collection of romantic music and playlists, including tunes by the late fertility god Barry White. Note to guys: Be really sure you know what you’re doing if you’re thinking about getting your honey a Zune for Valentine’s Day. (Read the full post about ‘Microsoft Sees Red With New Zune’…)

Macworld: MacBook Air is Real and Has Multi Touch
It looks like our sources were right, Apple has just announced the MacBook Air, “The World’s Thinnest Notebook”. The MacBook Air sports a full sized, 13.3 inch LED backlit screen with a built in iSight camera and a full sized, backlit keyboard. The whole thing is just 0.16 inches thick. So thin, in fact, that you can slide it into an envelope. The new notebook also has a multi touch trackpad, and it’s big. The multi touch functions can be customized, but the essentials are there too: the pinch’n'zoom of the iPhone, for instance. Apple have gone with a tiny, iPod sized 1.8 inch hard drive to save space, which will be 80GB in size, but – get this – there’s an option for a 64GB SSD! The iTunes Store now offers movie rentals. Priced at $3 for old titles and $4 for new releases, you can keep then for up to 30 days before watching them, and once you hit play, you get 24 hours. The big news is that every major studio is on board, and movies will be added 30 days after the DVD release. Streaming starts almost straight away, and you can watch in either DVD quality, or HD (hot damn!) with Dolby 5.1 sound. HD movies cost a buck more.

Apple TV has also been updated, and gets what it should have had to begin with: Direct downloads. Now, instead of futzing around with the Mac to get your content and then streaming it to the Apple TV, you can browse the iTunes Store and buy direct.
