Posted Feb 1st 2008 11:28PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Digital CamerasEye-Fi still hasn’t taken the world by storm, but the company is hard at work improving the WiFi-enabled SD card, which is now available in Ritz Camera outlets. The newest feature for the cards, due on February 12, is called “Smart Boost,” which will intelligently prioritize where data is going to improve battery life. If your computer is on or awake, the Eye-Fi will send photos across the LAN to the client software, which will then handle the upload to your fave photo service, but if the Eye-Fi doesn’t detect your machine, the chip will send images the service directly. Of course, this is all assuming you’re still on your home network, so the practic (Read the full post about ‘Eye-Fi to get upgraded with “Smart Boost,” become available in Ritz Camera stores’…)

NASA plans on beaming The Beatles Across the Universe into space making it the first song to be used in such a way. The transmission of the song will mark the 40th anniversary of the song’s recording. It will be aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light years away from Earth, and it will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. This will also mark 50 years of NASA, 45 years of the Deep Space Network and 50 years since the founding of Explorer 1, the first US satellite. “Amazing! Well done, Nasa! Send my love to the aliens.” was Sir Paul McCartney’s reaction to the news. (Read the full post about ‘NASA beams the Beatles into space; Aliens generally confused’…)

Posted Feb 1st 2008 4:53PM by Donald MelansonFiled under: Digital Cameras, GPS We haven’t heard much about Jobo’s Photo GPS camera add-on since it was announced around the time of last year’s PMA show, and it now looks like that’s been for good reason, as the company’s apparently decided to have another go at this whole “product launch” thing at this year’s PMA. From the looks of it, however, not much has changed with the device itself in the ensuing months, with it still promising to attach to your camera’s flash hot shoe and record GPS information as you shoot, and squeeze all that data into your images’ EXIF metadata (or XML file in the case of RAW images) when you sync it up. Posted Feb 1st 2008 10:00PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Gaming Naturally curious as to why Xbox 360 Elites are so difficult to find, we went straight to the source — and Microsoft tells us that demand is simply outstripping supply on the 360 Elite right now, and that no model lineup changes are planned at this time — especially since the Elite is their hot seller. Well, so much for that conspiracy — guess we’re back to reading the PS3 tea leaves.Tags: video games, Ogg Vorbis, audio, speaker (Read the full post about ‘Microsoft says 360 Elite is just so hot right now, no SKU changes planned’…)

TigerDirect has completed the purchase of 16 of the CompUSA retail locations as well as the inventory and website. According to a statement from TigerDirect, the “best CompUSA retail stores” will be integrated within a few weeks. According to a tipster over on the Consumerist the locations will include the retail locations from Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, of course there has not been any confirmation on that. Having been to a TigerDirect retail location before, this news, at least to me does not sound really good. Of course with some of the bad experiences that I had while shopping at CompUSA, it may just be like no changes were made. Via [Consumerist] Today, we made history! Posted Feb 1st 2008 3:03PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Portable AudioWell, that makes three — Sony and XM announced today that the two companies have reached a settlement in the Pioneer XM + MP3 case. As you’d expect, terms of the deal are super-secret, but we hear XM tells that to all the multinational record conglomerates it gets in bed with. Anyway, with Warner, Universal, and Sony all lined up, all XM has to do is woo EMI and this nightmare of dullness should finally be over — and we should start seeing some hot new devices.Tags: mobile phone, cellphone, TV, gear (Read the full post about ‘XM and Sony BMG kiss and make up over the Inno’…)

Posted Feb 1st 2008 2:42PM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Laptops If our description from CES of the perplexing (and frankly inconvenient) navigation associated with E-Lead’s Noahpad wasn’t enough to truly depict what is going on with this thing, then perhaps these videos will help. Sure, they’ve gotten a British guy to do voice-overs, and the company is playing some interesting angles with the multi-use concept, but we’re not sold that anyone could really get used to that keyboard. Take a look for yourself… (Read the full post about ‘Two videos of E-Lead’s Noahpad in action’…)
