Hey Everex, it’s the 15th: CloudBooks please?
Posted Feb 15th 2008 8:27AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: LaptopsOk Everex, it’s been the 15th of February for more than 8 hours in the US. Still, your CloudBook is nowhere to be found on Wal-mart or ZaReason. As intriguing as this “deactivated” CloudBook page is over at NewEgg, it’s hardly a replacement for the thrill of being the first kid on the block to unbox a $399, 7-inch laptop with 30GB disk now is it? [Thanks, Dirkus and Travis M.]Read — Wal-mart (nope)Read — ZaReason (zilch)Read — NewEgg (you wish)Tags: computers, high definition TV, ipod, M4A (Read the full post about ‘Hey Everex, it’s the 15th: CloudBooks please?’…)

Robots could replace live bunnies in chemical testing procedures
Posted Feb 15th 2008 11:38AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Robots We don’t know about you, but to us, there’s nothing cuter than a warm, cuddly bunny — save for Hello Kitty, of course. Thankfully, the National Institute of Health and the EPA have teamed up to jumpstart a five-year research program that “will use high-speed automated screening robots” instead of live animals to run chemical tests on cells grown in a laboratory. Reportedly, the long term goal here is to “reduce the cost, time and number of animals used in screening everything from pesticides to household chemicals,” but according to those involved with the initiative, it’ll be quite some time before non animal-based testing becomes the norm. Yashica Cameras Return From Grave
Yashica, which used to be a well-respected mid-range camera brand, is back from the dead after going bust in 2005. Chinese conglomerate MF Jebsen has bought up the brand and is quietly trotting out a new line of digital and 35mm cameras, camcorders and accessories. There’s no word yet on pricing or U.S. availability, and the initial lineup of digicams seems awfully imitative of every other point-and-shoot out there. Camcorders may be a different matter, however. (Read the full post about ‘Yashica Cameras Return From Grave’…)

Apple doesn’t want you to have to buy a GPS unit, judging from a new patent application that envisions combining maps and speech synthesis into iPod-ready "podmaps" that would get you to your destination in style.

With the system for "creation, management and delivery of map-based media items," you’d log on to a remote server before your trip and tell it where you want to go.

After suffering from several body blows from Netflix and Best Buy earlier in the week, the fledging, wounded outfit known as the hd dvd format may have finally, mercifully, been taken out by the consumerist granddaddy of them all: Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart announced today that it will stop selling HD DVD movies by June, and is expected to restock its shelves with ‘only Blu-ray movies, hardware machines, as well as standard definition movies and DVD players, and up converts.’ Without the support of the biggest chain of discount department stores in the world, all other brick-and-mortar retailers will likely stand down, and it might push the top online ones, like Amazon, to lower their investment in the area and eventually phase it out.

Toshiba to drop HD DVD?

Posted on: 15, Feb

It seems the end of hd dvd is neigh says The Hollywood Reporter. After a weak format war that lasted nearly three years, sources are reporting that Toshiba, the technology’s primary developer and supporter, is close to dropping the ball on its high definition baby. The reports follow Warner Brothers’ announcement that it would support only Blu-ray and Netflix then opting to discontinue support of new HD DVD titles.

Meanwhile, Toshiba insists that no decision has been reached, but says, “Given the market developments in the past month, Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players.”

All-in-all, this move isn’t necessarily a bad one.

Preview: Facebreaker

Posted on: 15, Feb

Just a few months after the Xbox 360 first launched, Fight Night Round 3 was one of the first current-gen looking titles–particularly praised for its realistic sweat. EA Canada, the team behind that fantastic simulation, is getting back in the ring, but this time it’s an arcade-type slugfest. Read on to see whether Facebreaker will be another knockout punch for EA or just K-O’d.

As the title may suggest, Facebreaker features real-time facial deformation. You’ll beat your opponents senseless, and then see the devastation.
