Shocker: Samsung to Reduce its HD-DVD Support
Given the HD-DVD debacle, it’s not surprising that Samsung will reduce its support for HD-DVD in the near future, even though the company was somewhat biased towards Blu-Ray. While scaling back HD-DVD might sound like a lot of work, it actually isn’t. Samsung has been building dual-format drives for some time, and removing the HD-DVD optical components is extremely easy. Of course, the good news is that mono-format drive prices will go down faster. Tags: plasma, design, wi-fi, computers (Read the full post about ‘Shocker: Samsung to Reduce its HD-DVD Support’…)

Kenwood AS-IP300 iPod dock dreams of flight
Posted Feb 18th 2008 8:52AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio At least that’s the only way we can explain the stealth bomber look on this AS-IP300 ipod dock from Kenwood. You can buy a black version to complete the effect, but don’t expect to get much out of these 1.9W stereo speakers. The best news is that you’re looking at a 95 Euro ($140-ish) pricetag for the unit, which has us rather ambivilant as to if or when this’ll be getting a Stateside release.Tags: game, CD, gps, hi fi (Read the full post about ‘Kenwood AS-IP300 iPod dock dreams of flight’…)

Sony announces sexy HDMI hub, Bluetooth paraphernalia to clutter up our life
Posted Feb 18th 2008 9:13AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio Sony’s still got that spark that can make a boring old HDMI switcher into a fashion statement. The four port SB-HD41R (pictured) isn’t doing anything special, but it does it in style. Meanwhile the SRS-BT100 and the DRC-BT15 (pictured after the break) help you get your Bluetooth on, with the BT100 working as an autonomous 30W speaker for you Bluetooth-capable music players, while the DRC-BT15 acts as a Bluetooth adapter, pumping out whatever comes in the minijack over EDR / A2DP. Verizon Wireless Samsung U940 FCC style pics
We saw the FCC approval came for the Samsung U940 back in late December and now we are seeing some of those wonderful FCC-style pictures. A release date and pricing information is still not know. The FCC also has a bit of possible bad news for anyone who was excited about getting the U940 as a web phone, the user manual is stating that the browser is WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and not HTML. That could be disappointing, especially considering the U940 was becoming a highly anticipated phone. Dell set to launch new AMD-based systems this week

Remember last week when we told you that Dell had gotten rid of almost all of their AMD-based systems from their online store? Even though they posted a note on their site letting you know that you should look to their retail partners for AMD-powered PCs, they appear to have changed their mind. Later this week we’ll see several new systems from Dell, and they don’t have Intel inside. The new OptiPlex 740 PCs are slated to feature Phenom Triple-Core and Quad-Core chips, as well as the standard Athlon X2 Dual-Core CPUs. Dell has opted not to use integrated graphics, but rather utilize the Nvidia Quatro NVS 210S PCI Express x16 card. (Read the full post about ‘Dell set to launch new AMD-based systems this week’…)

Citing a lack of action on the part of eBay, both Adobe and Symantec have decided to take action against certain sellers offering pirated software on the auction site.

The lawsuits have been started by the Software & Information Industry Association Auction Litigation Program. This program represents a wide range of companies that counts well know names such as Adobe, Symantec, McAfee, Oracle, Apple, Autodesk, and Borland on its list of members.

Xbox 360 Blu-ray player rumor returns right on cue
Posted Feb 18th 2008 5:41AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Gaming, HDTV var Two years and 1 month ago today we saw the kibosh come down on the Xbox 360 Blu-ray player rumor. This morning it returns with the prospect of a Microsoft player as early as May. According to Smarthouse, their “insiders at Microsoft” claim that a standalone Blu-ray player is already working in-house. With the appropriate approvals it could be on sale within 3 months. A 360 with built-in Blu-ray is also being worked on although the possibility of moving it out to retail is less clear with HD downloads on the horizon. Not that any of this is unexpected given the circumstances. We never expected Microsoft to go down with the hd dvd ship — they’re just passengers on this ill-fated voyage, not the captains.[Thanks, Oakie]Tags: hi fi, camera, consumer electronics, digital (Read the full post about ‘Xbox 360 Blu-ray player rumor returns right on cue’…)

    Two phones for everyone

Do you know anyone in your circle of friends who does not yet own a cell phone? Probably not, as all and sundry have already picked up a handset regardless of age and economic background. After all, cell phone manufacturers have long catered their handsets to people from all walks of life, ranging from super cheap phones to high ends ones that seem to be able to do everything. The keyword for the latter group is ’seem’, as Real Networks CEO Rob Glaser thinks otherwise. The man says that everyone will eventually carry at least a couple of cell phones since there is no perfect handset that is capable of doing everything you want and provide everything you need.
