A lawsuit filed by two consumers last year over PC’s marked “Windows Vista Capable” has been granted class-action status by a Seattle District Court judge. The lawsuit, which was filed in March of 2007, could now potentially include all owners of Windows XP computers marked as a “Vista Capable” PC.

In quite possibly the best lifestyle image every by ASUS, here we have an image that begs, “ASUS will put you to sleep.” Or perhaps, “toxic fumes from the Nova will knock you out!” Unfortunately, they were trying to convey how quiet this puppy is. The unit, unlike the photo, looks very interesting. The Nova-P22 is a bit of an odd duck: part laptop/part desktop. It has the built-in speakers, built in connectivity, form factor of a laptop but the Intel Core 2 Duo Desktop processor and super quiet performance of a desktop. ASUS aims this unit to fit to your space constraints and took some care in making this unit very attractive in either a piano or glossy pearl white. A docking station is available. This is one of the tiniest ECGs I’ve ever laid my eyes on, as it consists of an extremely tiny LCD display, a pair of electrodes and an ARM training unit. It is powered by an STM32 Primer chip, where pressing both your thumbs on the two electrodes will begin the ECG trace. Once your pulse is detected, it will beep while showing off the heart rate in a decimal format in the top left hand corner. Hopefully the accuracy of such a simple DIY project can be improved, allowing field personnel to carry a compact and lightweight ECG - that remains but a pipe dream at the moment, so this DIY ECG is relegated to the “fun” category in the meantime. Looks like the latest version of Botanicalls is able to communicate with Twitter, thanks to an Arduino electronics board which is hooked up to a notebook. Several soil moisture probes created from galvanised nails allow the plant to “communicate” with you by sending a relevant signal which will then appear on the screen, letting you know whether you’ve been giving them too much water or worse - none at all. Now if only scientists can find out whether plants talk to each other or not… Tags: video games, gaming, Ogg, computers (Read the full post about ‘Botanicalls Communicate With Twitter’…)

This is high in the, “I didn’t know that” ranking. Apparently, when you get a Gmail email address you actually get two: your regular @gmail.com and a @googlemail.com. Both email addresses get to you. Perhaps Google wasn’t sure the “Gmail” name was going to take off? No matter, as here is a handy trick you can use to further filter your mail. By giving the @googlemail.com address to your close and trusted friends and family, you can set up a filter to always allow their mail to get through leaving the @gmail.com address to be more of a catch all. Less spam that gets to you is a good thing. (Read the full post about ‘Gmail users get double the fun: two email addresses’…)

Posted Feb 26th 2008 2:22AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Misc. gadgets We’ve seen quite a few efforts to use gardens and terrariums in cities to order to bring down overall CO2 emissions and reduce temperatures, but Tokyo’s earthquake-prone location means that structures there have to meet strict load requirements — so a company called Suntory Ltd., has developed a synthetic dirt substitute called Pafcal it says weighs less than half as much as real soil. The fake dirt, which is made of urethane, can reduce the internal temperature of a building with a roof garden up to 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit). Of course, there’s considerable irony in trying to save the planet by covering concrete buildings in fak (Read the full post about ‘Japanese plastic dirt is half as dense as real dirt, over 100 times more plastic’…)
