Posted Feb 1st 2008 5:57AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Laptops It’s that time of the product cycle again, the teardown. This time, iFixit’s applying the Xacto to Apple’s MacBook Air. Notable discoveries are an easy to disassemble chassis just big enough for Samsung’s 1.8-inch, 80GB disk but not the relatively chubby 160GB variety found in the iPod classic. They also found the new multi-touch trackpad using the same control chip as the iPod touch and iPhone — the Broadcom BCM5974. That leaves Apple plenty of room to grow the gesture options via software updates. Want to remove the battery? Go ahead, 19 screw removals (in addition to Apple’s non-removable feebie) will get the job done. Posted Jan 31st 2008 10:11PM by Steven KimFiled under: Digital Cameras Another colorful point-and-shoot, you say? Yes, but with a difference: General Imaging’s E-1050 uses Geotate’s clever approach to geotagging your photos. Add that to a 10-megapixel sensor, 5x zoom, electronic image stabilization and face detection and red eye removal that’s in vogue this year, and you’ve got an interesting little package. Unfortunately, the unit was tethered by its HDMI port to a TV, so we couldn’t play around with the unit and give away our location, so we’ll have to wait and see if geotagging is enough of a checkmark to differentiate this little digicam. Posted Jan 31st 2008 4:16PM by Steven KimFiled under: Digital Cameras There doesn’t seem to be a lot of excitement when Pentax releases new cameras in its Optio range — do you people only love them for their DSLRs? — but nonetheless, we gave them the same hands-on treatment that everyone else gets. Below you’ll find the new S12, E50, and M50 in all their seemingly-unpopular glory, despite the fact that they seemed like fairly stylish, solidly-built products to us. Still with us? As much as I love my iPhone, I can’t stand getting fingerprints all over the phone’s beautiful glossy screen. So I was jazzed when the guys over at Norway’s Elliptic Labs let me know about their new touchless user interface technology. The system is capable of detecting movements in 3-dimensions without ever having to put your fingers on the screen. click to view this video clip Their patented touchless interface doesn’t require that you wear any special sensors on your hand either. You just point at the screen (from as far as 5 feet away), and you can manipulate objects in 3D. click to view this video clip Elliptic says the technology is compact enough that it could eventually be embedded into mobile devices. Posted Jan 31st 2008 5:28PM by Darren MurphFiled under: HDTV, Home Entertainment When we forced the TiVo HD and Series3 to go mano-a-mano back in October of last year, we had a sneaking suspicion that the latter was actually no longer being produced. Fast forward (har) three months, and sure enough, it seems that the end really is nigh for the Series3. According to TiVo Lovers (who heard directly from DVRupgrade), TiVo is accelerating the EOL (end of life) of the Series3 and “focusing all efforts on the recently launched, lower cost TiVo HD.” Apparently, the firm managed to sell through oodles of Series3 boxes over the holidays (thanks in large part to a sizable rebate-based promotion), and rather than searching for creative ways to solve the “continued component shortage,” TiVo is reportedly choosing to nudge potential customers in the direction of the TiVo HD.
