Silverlit VBeat Air Guitar and Air Drums are better than the real thing
Posted Mar 10th 2008 12:11PM by Paul MillerFiled under: Misc. gadgets Face it, nobody has time these days to learn a real instrument with “strings” and “sevenths” and these “quarternotes” we hear tell of. That’s why all music recorded from 2002 on has been 100% sampled: it’s just better that way. The next step in this natural evolution, of course, is instrument-less instruments. Silverlit provides just such a future with the VBeat Air Guitar and Air Drums. Building upon Tomy’s groundbreaking Air Guitar Pro, the VBeat instruments include “free style” and “easy go” modes, the latter of which allows for playing you fakestrument to pre-programmed rhythms — a synergy of layered samples and a metronome, simply stunning. AquaSpherePRO Dispensing System
Folks who own a pond at home will find that maintaining it can be rather hard work. The AquaSpherePRO Dispensing System aims to ease your burden, as all you need to do is drop this patented, pond-maintenance dispensing system into the water in order for it to work. It functions by using continuous-release technology, turning it into an on-site bacteria “factory”, incubating, growing, and dispensing beneficial bacteria into the water 24/7 for up to 30 days. It operates most effectively in water temperatures between 34° F and 110° F, and has no particular season in which the AquaSpherePRO can be used in your pond. Prices range from $39.99 to $174.99, depending on how large of a pond you have. (Read the full post about ‘AquaSpherePRO Dispensing System’…)

Cricket Communications has launched the world’s first CDMA Advanced Wireless Service (AWS) mobile phone - the UTStarcom CDM7126. The CDM7126 will also be available in other Cricket markets nationwide, but initially the launch is limited to Tulsa, Oklahoma. A couple of years ago (it doesn’t seem that long ago…) I waxed lyrical about the advantages of using a modded Xbox with XBMC as a living room media adapter.

Unfortunately technology moves on and my trusty Xbox just didn’t have the horsepower to play back high definition content. The next gen consoles can do it but they still aren’t as flexible as I’d like (although kudos to Microsoft for finally enabling DivX playback on the 360).

So what do to? The mac mini stepped in to fill the gap nicely; the new core duo models are fairly powerful, it’s tiny and it’s almost silent running.

Hitachi joins IBM’s quest for sub-32nm semiconductor technology
Posted Mar 10th 2008 5:42AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Misc. gadgetsAs of this morning you can add Hitachi to the list of cohorts IBM has gathered in its quest for sub-32nm circuitry. Hitachi’s 2-year semiconductor research agreement — a first between IBM and Hitachi — puts them under a loose-knit alliance with AMD, Chartered, Freescale, Infineon, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and STMicroelectronics. The notable, non-member here is of course, Intel; that little company making “45-nm processes” and “Hi-K metal gate” house-hold terms amongst geeky, type-A adopters of consumer electronics. Mug tells you the temperature

Mug tells you the temperature

There is nothing quite like sipping on a cup of hot coffee in the morning, but how many of us are alert enough the moment we get out of bed to know that something is hot/cold? With this Hot-Cold Mug, you will be able to tell the difference verbally, as it is capable of changing its color gradually from total white to black, where the former indicates that it is as hot as the surface of the sun itself while the latter means there is no more heat left in the coffee. The Hot-Cold Mug retails for $25 a pop and makes for a great office present. (Read the full post about ‘Mug tells you the temperature’…)

Camera sees through clothes

Camera sees through clothes

A British company has come up with a camera that surprisingly enough, goes against all things prude in Britain. This unique camera has the special ability to detect various items such as weapons, drugs and even explosives hidden under one’s clothes from up to 25 meters away, making this a potential breakthrough where the security industry is concerned. Dubbed the T5000 camera from ThruVision, it utilizes “passive imaging technology” that helps identify objects via their natural electromagnetic rays, also known as Terahertz or T-rays which are emitted. This high-powered camera boasts the ability to detect hidden objects from up to 80 feet away, and can work just fine even when people are moving. JVC’s Publio TX-700 handheld helps advertise, doubles as PMP
Posted Mar 10th 2008 1:31AM by Darren MurphFiled under: Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable Video Here’s a curious one. Straight out of JVC’s Japanese laboratory comes the Publio TX-700, which was seemingly created to be used in stores to play back video files and promotional stills depending on what type of sale was ongoing. Still, we see a fair bit more potential in this 7-inch gizmo. It does look a tad bulky — we’ll give you that — but it manages to feature MPEG1/2, MP3, JPEG and BMP format support, an SD expansion slot, built-in stereo speakers, USB 2.0 connectivity and a programmable on / off setting. Unfortunately, we’re left wondering what the screen resolution, price and availability (Read the full post about ‘JVC’s Publio TX-700 handheld helps advertise, doubles as PMP’…)
