Nokia N810 with WiMAX in the wild
While technically, the April 1 release of Nokia’s WiMAX-enabled N810 is still just a rumor, more evidence suggests that this might be more than just a distinct possibility. Especially now that CTIA is well on its way, its quite easy to see how all these “in the wild” photos end up in public. The image above came from a Nokia employee’s Flickr page with two others, but checking on it now, you’ll find that these photos have been removed. Good thing a forum member at Internet Tablet Talk saved a copy of the first one, or else there would be no way to prove the integrity of this rumor. Perhaps tomorrow, we’ll see some official N810 product shots, and maybe even the Flickr photos will be restored on the Net by its owner. Soldiers could, in the near future, bring up a detailed 3D map of the surrounding area at will if General Dynamics UK actually manage to pull off their project successfully. This “near real-time” 3D map system uses a wide range of technologies to make it possible, including LIDAR, thermal imaging and x-ray backscatter techniques in order to display buildings, streets as well as the objects and people living inside. Now that’s what I call technology - no idea just how much processing power is required to churn all this information, but it will definitely come in handy where hostage situations are concerned.

Ofcom, the UK Office of Communications has confirmed plans that they aim to allow cellular communications on board UK aircraft. The plans will have to first go through the Civil Aviation Authority, and then the scheme may ‘take off’ in planes around Europe. Unfortunately, plans haven’t been confirmed for those of you the other side of the Atlantic.

The calling will work by using an onboard base station, a unit which connects to a satellite and will be turned on above 3,000 feet, as to avoid interference with ground networks. The service will be charged at the users standard network rate, which should mean business and personal users can enjoy increased productivity on flights.

3Tb of Removable Storage

3Tb of Removable Storage

The RAIDFrame Backup system has been created by a company named Highly Reliable Systems and works with removable cartridges which can store 3 Terabytes of data. The 1 Bay version carries the 1 cartridge and attaches direct to your server or PC via USB or eSATA. With the device being RAID it means that no special drivers are required to read the data as the server will see the RAID array as 1 drive. RAIDPacs are made of 3 standard SATA drives which can be replaced as needed. The RAID controller is built in to the device meaning that as soon as the RAID pac is connected up, it just shows as removable storage. (Read the full post about ‘3Tb of Removable Storage’…)

Sun Jar
Sun Jar The Sun Jar uses the sun’s rays to power three natural-coloured LED lights. The light emitted from them is then diffused through the jar’s frosted glass, giving the appearance of sunlight trapped inside. Sony Rolly to soon roll out in different colors
First glimpse of the Sony Rolly, I couldn’t identify what it is. Looks like a bomb or an egg so I thought it’s nothing to take seriously. Maybe another useless novelty item. If like me, you can’t figure out what the Rolly is, it’s a new MP3 player from Sony. Just that. No specs have leaked yet. Set to launch this April 19 in Japan, the Rolly features a wing-like attachment at the sides which sill puzzles me. What’ s more surprising is that these colored wings will be sold separately at $15 apart from the $400 price of the Sony Rolly. No word yet has been given when the Sony Rolly with colored wings will officially be released in the US. (Read the full post about ‘Sony Rolly to soon roll out in different colors’…)

Researchers at the University of Illionois, headed up by Professor John Rogers, managed to create circuitry that is capable of bending.

The feat has been made possible by combining ultra-thin silicon material with rubber, effectively placing silicon on to the bendable rubber surface. The breakthrough has come from the fact that not only are they able to produce complete integrated circuits, but also the performance of those circuits is on a par with conventionally manufactured ones.

The ability to bend a silicon chip without breaking it is due to the actual size of the circuitry. In Professor Rogers’ labs, they can create a complete circuit that is just 1.5 microns thick.
