Capture 3D Images on the Move
This stripe projection 3D sensor from Fraunhofer IOF helps compose a 3D model, simply by projecting a stripe pattern onto the subject, using the couple of “eyes” to capture slightly distinct angles of the image based on the deducted geometry. While this technology isn’t exactly the newest on the block, it is the first of its kind to be crammed into such a small, pocket-friendly form factor. 160Mbps is a peak theoretical number of course, but still, it should be significantly faster that any consumer connection when it comes out. At the moment, only Mineapolis and St-paul residents can benefit from a 50 Mbps offer that could eventually reach 160Mbps. It doesn’t come for cheap ($150 per month), but I guess that there is a good niche of customers who would sign up.

It always bugs me to see that we’re in @#$^ Silicon Valley and that I am stuck with a 6Mbps DSL connection and a 16Mbps cable one.

Apple’s macbook air even in its infancy stage is already being threatened by other laptop manufacturers. UK-based laptop maker Rock for one has released its newest laptop model the Pegasus P210, a 12-inch laptop that weighs in at just about 2.2-pounds.

In addition to its weight, or lack-off, the Pegasus P210 also brags of a ‘potential’ 6-hour battery life, which assuming that would be a real world estimate would be wonderful. Those features alone could be enough for the Pegasus P210 to gain the moniker – ideal travel companion.

But wait, there’s more to the Pegasus P210 than just being lightweight and having a ‘potential’ battery life of 6 hours.

Motorola to cut another 2,600 jobs
Posted Apr 3rd 2008 8:02PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Misc. gadgetsThe tough times just don’t seem to end at Motorola — the company announced today that it’s laying off another 2,600 workers, for a total of 10,000 positions eliminated since the start of 2007. That’s on top of the various high-level executive departures that have been taken place lately, not to mention the company’s plan to split off its mobile phone business, which will undoubtedly lead to more cuts down the line. The goal is to reduce costs by some $500M by the end of the year, and some of the jobs being lost come as Moto closes a factory in Singapore and a WiMAX development lab in Florida. According to the All About Microsoft blog, Microsoft has officially confirmed that you will no longer be able to purchase a copy of Windows XP after June 30th.

This was the original date set in the Windows Life-Cycle Policy, and the only exceptions are shipping in Ultra Low-Cost PCs, like the Asus Eee, or shipping preloaded on new machines. The ULPCs exception ends on June 30, 2010, or one year after the next version of Windows is available, whichever comes first.

Filed under: Misc. gadgetsLooks like Dell’s plan to trim $3B in costs from its budget is going to involve even more job cuts than the 8,800 already announced — speaking to analysts today, Michael Dell said that his company’s management had “identified a very significant opportunity” to cut costs, and that it was “aggressively going after it.” That means even more jobs will be slashed, apparently — a further 1,000 this quarter at least, but Dell wouldn’t say what the total would be in the end, just that it would be more than 8,800. Low-Cost Nokia Phones Might Find Their Way to Developed Countries (Ovum)
Analysts think that Nokia’s emerging markets phones might leak into developed countries and that could help low-spending users upgrade their phones. “This should be good news for helping operators in mature markets to encourage low-spending users to replace their phone and - hopefully - start using more advanced services.” Martin Garner, Ovum Low-spending users have plenty of “free” phones to chose from right now, so it’s not clear why that would help. However, it would be naïve to think that these phones cannot leak outside of their intended markets. It the computer space, it has been demonstrated that low-cost computers aimed at emerging countries are generating an immense interest – because they are cheap and… “good enough”. T-Mobile Germany Subsidizes iPhones
Folks living in Germany have it easy where the iPhone is concerned, thanks to T-Mobile who are offering the 8GB iPhone for a mere €99, as long as you purchase it with a 24-month contract. Granted, there are plenty of rumors floating around about a 3G iPhone being released sometime this year, but I’m sure the iPhone will still look good a couple of years down the road. Folks rocking to the monthly €89 Complete XL plan will benefit from 1,000 minutes, 300 SMS messages, and unlimited data. Does this news make you want to move to Germany? I’d prefer to go there during October for Oktoberfest while talking nonsense with my friends on the iphone in a drunken stupor. (Read the full post about ‘T-Mobile Germany Subsidizes iPhones’…)

World’s Smallest HD Camcorder From Sony Gets Thumbs Up
Sony’s new HDR-TG1 Handycam puts a high definition camera in a 10oz box. Aimed at travelers, the 1920 x 1080 also takes 4MP stills, and both still and movie modes feature face detection. The case is titanium, and the 2.7″ flip-out screen is fashionably touch-sensitive. Of course, Sony had to ruin things. While there is a 4GB memory card supplied with the camera, it is a Memory Stick Duo Mark2. No cheapo SD or Compact Flash cards allowed. And while the actual name of the camcorder might give Gadget Labber Daniel Dumas the shivers, Sony has called the internal image processing engine the BIONZ, which is clearly a contraction of Bionic Fonz, and therefore the best name ever.
