Craigslist launched its official blog several days ago, giving itself a new way to reach out to users, other than through founder Craig Newmark’s own personal web site. Basically, it’s a stripped down version of a blog with a very minimalist design, rudimentary comment system, and it doesn’t even have its own RSS feed. Now this event in itself would’ve been news-worthy right off the bat, but something else in relation to this is happening at the same time in the Interwebs, and causing CL quite a hassle.

This “something else” is the existence of an unofficial Craigslist blog, called CraigslistBlog.org, which recently added the moniker “unofficial” at the end of its name to appease CL CEO Jim Buckmaster’s pleas.

Microsoft rears head, gives Yahoo 3 weeks to go Quietly
In a recent letter to the Yahoo! board of directors, Steve Ballmer has set an ultimatum upon the company behind the most visited site in the world, according to traffic ranking site Alexa. On January 31 of this year, Microsoft made its $46 billion dollar offer to takeover the Sunnyvale internet giant, which was 62 percent more their market value on that day. Ballmer, in his letter, was hoping for a “speedy and ultimately friendly transaction.” However, Yahoo! has vehemently resisted the takeover, had declined the hefty offer.  Well, Steve “Developer” Ballmer will not be denied, and has stated that he believes the time “is now” for the two companies to carry through with the merger.  Thus, Ballmer has given Yahoo! How to Catch a Netflix Thief

How to Catch a Netflix Thief
The title says it all. Brian Krische and his roommate grew suspicious after far too many of their Netflix movies disappeared in the mail. So like any true nerds, they cooked up a hi-tech mousetrap. Krische hooked a camcorder up to his MacBook, installed some motion detecting security camera software and pointed the whole lot at the mailboxes. Later that very day, their suspicion “that it was the white-trash tenants in the first floor” was proved true. The upstairs neighbor loitered around their mailbox and then disappeared with the red Netflix mailer. The guys called Netflix, who were ‘very understanding”. They also called the police, who busted the perp tried him. The sentence? (Read the full post about ‘How to Catch a Netflix Thief’…)

Redesigned 3G iPhone Coated in Shiny Black Plastic?
It seems only fitting that after two weeks of feverish 3G iPhone rumor mongering there would finally emerge a photo of this mythical device. This one was fed to the ipod Observer, and if there’s any merit to it, your 3G iphone will be a shiny black little number, with a rear end clad in glossy black plastic instead of aluminum. Based on the photo, the phone also appears to do away with the separate black plastic end piece that covers the antenna. Personally, I have to say it also looks suspiciously similar to Knight Creations’ customized TiAlN (Titanium Nitride/Titanium Aluminum Nitride) iPhones. And although Apple does include that black plastic end piece to help create a clear signal for the phone, I’m not convinced Apple would completely do away with aluminum. Our server virtualisation project is moving along apace recently - we have decommissioned a number of physical servers and moved to a virtual server platform and I can happily report that virtualising takes time but it is worth it, especially as we have been seeing green recently. Mind you the reduction in power requirements from the physical servers is definitely a small step in the green direction for improving technology and the environment - not only that but the uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) last longer as their load is less - win win so far. Receiving the “call out” request in the middle of the night because the UPS has ran out is never a happy call especially when it has been a long late night trying to get the kids to bed but the phone vibrates away and duty calls.

Awang A9000 Clones AT&T Tilt

Awang A9000 Clones AT&T Tilt
The AT&T Tilt has an admirer in the form of the Awang A9000 handset. This clone boasts a similar QWERTY keypad and overall design of the AT&T Tilt, featuring a microSD memory card slot, an integrated digital camera and in all probability, some sort of Windows Mobile operating system. I wonder how much this will cost, and will it ever fool anyone? Tags: cable, wireless, CD, Gadget (Read the full post about ‘Awang A9000 Clones AT&T Tilt’…)

5-in-1 Gadget Pen isn’t just a writing instrument
Though I am usually skeptical about multi-functional devices, my love for unusual pens weakens this stance when it comes to the 5-in-1 gadget pen. This cool pen has 5 different integrated tools which includes a ball-point tip for writing, mini torch, laser pointer, bank note checker, stylus for your PDA, and a neuralizer which you can use to wipe away people’s memories! Like Agent J from Men in Black. Credit the neuralizer to my wild imagination (read yearning), but even without that, the 5-in-1 pen holds my interest. The sleek silver finish adds a geeky touch to the gadget which weighs just about 30g in spite of the embellishments. All yours for just $11. Via The Red Ferret Journal. Wacom Cintiq 12WX

Posted on: 7, Apr

Wacom’s new high-end tablet, the Cintiq 12WX is one interesting tablet as you will be able to use it as a dual monitor and a tablet simultaneously, adding a previously unthought of dimension to a peripheral which we take for granted. All you need to do is press an express button on the top left hand corner of the 12WX, and the tablet automatically springs to life, being activated by turns. The users will then be free to work on a PC or the tablet, depending on their preference. It tips the scales at 1.8kg, making it suitable to work on the 12.1″ LCD panel wherever one goes.
