Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ10 gets reviewed
Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-LZ10 certainly won’t win over many folks on its looks alone, but Photography Blog found that it more makes up for its rather bland exterior where it counts, and they’ve given the 10-megapixel camera high marks across the board in their new review. Winning the most praise is the camera’s full manual controls, which proved to be enough to get Photography Blog to declare the LZ10 “one of the most versatile compacts in its class.” Just as importantly, it also found the image quality to be an improvement over the previous generation models, with the 5x, 30mm wide-angle zoom lens turning in some great results and the camera’s image stabilization feature actually proving to be quite useful. Acer’s recently released Gemstones won’t remain new for too long as word on the street has it Acer will be rolling out a couple of new Acer notebooks as well, with the Aspire and Slim Gemstone Aspire systems ready to make you think about parting with your hard-earned money. Measuring 8.9″ and 12.1″ respectively, they will target the entry-level market and be powered by Intel’s recently released Atom processor. Project E wireless business cards by Postmachina
Here’s a concept that could save plenty of materials: wireless business cards. The concept developed by Postmachina is a small cube that can swap and store business info in one small square device. Those of you familiar with trade show circuits will appreciate this streamlined approach to the massive pain that is gathering and distributing cards. Then beyond that, you have to somehow catalog them in order to make them at all useful. If Project E came to fruition, you’d just be receiving digital information, so it would migrate into computer address books seamlessly. Truth be told though, this stuff is all already possible. Bluetooth phones could be leveraged as effective wrappers for business info. (Read the full post about ‘Project E wireless business cards by Postmachina’…)

Oh no. The European Commission said Monday that they plan to allow airlines to offer cellphone calls to passengers across the EU. This may sound like good news to cellphone carriers, airlines (who probably stand to gain a cut), and overzealous businessmen, but not to my ears. People (at least on the flights I’m on in the States) are already obnoxious enough on the tarmacs with their mobiles. Perhaps with some guidelines and/or rules, it may not be terrible, but I’m not holding my breath as airlines have done nothing to curtail those loudmouths, the same ones who don’t turn their phones off when they’re supposed to.

Now, I’m not against midair Internet access, mind you.

Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct
Posted Apr 6th 2008 5:39PM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: cellphones It looks like Samsung’s Instinct won’t just be kinda-sorta doing some iPhone stuff — it will be doing actual iphone stuff. Sprint announced that it has licensed Klausner’s Visual Voicemail (yes, Visual Voicemail) for use in the familiar looking device, adding weight to the argument that this is the carrier’s official play for the iPhone market. If you’ll recall, Klausner sued AT&T and Apple over the feature, which it claims violated two of its patents. (Read the full post about ‘Sprint licenses Visual Voicemail for the Samsung Instinct’…)

Van Der Led’s Jisus laptop is the answer to your prayers
Posted Apr 6th 2008 10:29PM by Joshua TopolskyFiled under: Laptops The Jisus laptop? We’re asking ourselves the same questions you are. We’ve never heard of Van Der Led, and we’ve certainly never heard of the Jisus — but boy are we intrigued. Apparently, the multi-colored (and multi-graphic’d) little guys will feature an 800 x 480, 8.9-inch LCD display, a 1GHz Loongson CPU (???), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage, 802.11b/g, stereo speakers, and a whole slew of familiar ports. The Eee-wannabe will apparently come with Ubuntu pre-installed (though frankly it’s unclear), and will be retailing for €299 when it hits the streets (the European streets, that is) on April 25th.
