Walter Bender speaks out about leaving OLPC, de-emphasis of radical projects
by Darren Murph, posted Apr 25th 2008 at 9:54AM What do you know? The former OLPC head of software and content did indeed resign at least partially over NickNeg’s growing fondness of Windows XP. In a recent soul-spilling interview with xconomy, Walter Bender made clear that he resigned his post at the non-profit due to the general de-emphasis of “radical projects like Sugar,” the innovative XO user interface which Mr. Bender was unsurprisingly neck-deep in during his stay. Freetalker Walkie-Talkie watch takes nerd apparel to a whole new level
Watches, these days, do a whole lot more than just telling time. Such as the Chinavasion watch, or the Brando watch, or even the MP4 watch, just to name a few. Basically of all the watches I named play videos and music, however, this latest watch is also a walkie-talkie, and doesn’t do any of those cool portable media functions. The walkie-talkie built-in this watch is pretty bad, especially by today’s standards. The range is 1.5 miles, but you can find normal walkie-talkie’s that have ranges of 20 miles or so. As much as this seems like too much government to me, there’s a part of me that wishes I lived in France where the French government is requiring builders to install fiber-optic cabling in new apartment complexes. The goal is that by 2010, all buildings with more than 25 apartments should be wired for broadband.

AT&T begins providing Starbucks Wi-Fi for select customers
Remember back in February, when we told you that AT&T and Starbucks struck a deal for free Wi-Fi in Starbucks stores, effectively leaving T-Mobile out to dry? Today, we have learned, that the telecom and coffee giant are determined to put that deal into effect. Starting May 1, qualifying AT&T customers will be able to get free Wi-Fi in 7,000 Starbucks shops around the United States. What does “qualifying” mean, you ask? It means the free Wi-Fi is available for anybody who is paying for any one of AT&T’s three broadband internet packages, any of the small business packages AT&T offers, or any U-verse package. Gryphon goes on a diet, gets ready for war
Back in 06 we reported on the ESG Gryphon Personal Flying Wing, and it had military applications written all over it, or, a cool opening scene to the next James Bond Flick. The latest version, rechristened the Gryphon Attack Glider by SPELLCO (the new company name), has slimmed down the weight by 30 pounds and also offers the ability to carry up to 100 pounds of onboard gear and even carry weapons hard points for mini missiles and bombs. Yowsa. And with a maximum glide speed of 135 MPH, that makes this not only an attack glider, but a serious special ops platform for attacking well behind enemy lines. Pilots wear a specially designed helmet that offers a heads-up display and provides on-board oxygen for those high altitude HALO JUMPS. Oregon Scientific intros weather-forecasting Meteo watch
Oregon Scientific managed to pique our interest with its proximity-sensing Weather In Motion clock, and it now looks like it’s got the solution for anyone that wishes they could take it with ‘em wherever they go, with the company set to release its new Meteo weather forecasting watch. While the need for a proximity sensor is obviously eliminated this time around, the watch apparently boasts the same weather information in icon-form as its desk-based companion, along with your usual time-telling, stop watch and alarm features. Look for this one to set you back £40 (or about $80) when it’s released next month. (Read the full post about ‘Oregon Scientific intros weather-forecasting Meteo watch’…)

Cassette MP3 player works with your old tape deck
I honestly can’t say that I miss the cassette tape one bit. Sure, I didn’t have a ton of time to really enjoy the format before CDs took over, but anything that you have to rewind isn’t very much fun. Some people still have fond memories of those little plastic cassettes, and want to show off their love. This Cassette mp3 player is perfect for such people. All you need to do is pop in an SD card loaded with your favorite tracks, and you’re ready to go. It may seem like just a novel case for an otherwise boring MP3 player, however, it does have one trick hidden up its sleeve. Acer, E-Ten team up to deliver smartphones by year’s end
Acer’s acquisition of Asian smartphone maker E-Ten has put them in a position to start manufacturing their own smartphones very soon. And they will, as confirmed by Acer President Gianfranco Lanci, saying that their company will release its first Windows Mobile powered smartphone by the end of this year or early next year. They’ll be focusing entirely on smartphones now, though, shifting away from E-Ten’s tradition of making PDA’s. And if E-Ten’s previous products are any indication of what this team up will be able to produce in the future, then we’re all in for a lot of suspense. iphone killer, anyone?
