Plug your PC into a wall electrical outlet, and that’s all your need to surf the web at high speeds. Tell the cable and DSL service providers where they can stuff their plugs, while you ride the wave of yet another next-generation technology at cheaper prices. Well…not yet. It’s been a bad couple of weeks for the concept of broadband over power line (BPL), which the Federal Communications Commission has been touting since 2003 as possible pricing competition for cable and DSL providers. It’s only a pilot program in a handful of cities, but the FCC commissioned studies on the technology and wanted an accelerated rollout of the program. When Carphone Warehouse and O2 cut the price of the 8GB iPhone last month, it was seen as a move to shift stock before the iPhone’s expected Second Coming this summer. And it worked. The 8GB model quickly sold out. Maybe it worked a little too well. According to the Guardian, Carphone Warehouse is also out of the 16GB model, and 02 has only a few left. Is this an ordering snafu or is there really a Wii-like iPhone drought in progress? The UK Apple Store still lists both models with a ship date of two days. But if there is a shortage, you can be sure that Apple would keep remaining units for itself: The rumor mill would go into overdrive if Apple itself ran out of phones. Sure it may be only a week until Mother’s Day, but it’s never too early to start thinking about Dad and picking up something for him next month for Father’s Day. Hope about replacing that old watch he keeps complaining about and get him one that will always remind him of the family he’s proud of. Brookstone has come out with a new Photowatch that can store and display up to 60 photo images on its LCD image screen. Dad can either view the pictures in slideshow mode or pick one image to display at a time while still keeping track of the day. Images are loaded onto watch using the mini USB port on the side. The only negative comment - the watch needs to be recharged after 8 hours of use also via the USB port. (Read the full post about ‘Brookstone Photowatch keeps family pictures close at hand’…)

It sounds like a re-launch; an open letter this week on the Amazon.com website from founder/CEO Jeff Bezos announcing that his Kindle book reader is “in stock and ready for immediate shipment.” Never mind that the electronic, wireless reader was actually ready to ship in November 2007, garnering headlines at the time in all the major national daily newspapers and the cover of Time Magazine. Bezos’ big bet on e-reading sells for $399, weighs just over 10 ounces, is as wide as a trade paperback and uses cell phone networks to wirelessly download books, magazines, newspapers and blogs from Amazon’s library. I have seen the iphone, and all the blackberry’s and other smart phones. Then I have heard the cold, dead polyphonic ringtone of my phone with its barely audible Casio keyboard cover of “Superstar”, mocking me. I bought my phone a mere eight months ago, just after the dawn of the iPhone, choosing it for its sleek size, and a consumer review which noted its superior battery life and technical bells and whistles. My phone is an excellent phone, and I could care less. I want a phone that does everything else, maybe even magic. A phone that takes crystal clear pictures, develops them, and prints them in a matte finish. I want a phone that plays music-actual music, an instrument perhaps the oboe.
