Microsoft Touch Windows Demoed
With touch screen displays being all the rage these days, it is no surprise that Microsoft will be including multi-touch features on its next operating system as an alternative to the tried and tested mouse. Needless to say, Microsoft executives secretly hope that Windows Vista’s successor will receive a much warmer reception when it rolls out sometime in 2010, bringing touch-based features that are currently available on the iphone (some of them, at least). Windows 7, as the new operating system is nicknamed, is tipped to change the way people interact with PCs in the future, but I think when it comes to everyday work the mouse is still more important and efficient. What do you think? (Read the full post about ‘Microsoft Touch Windows Demoed’…)

Review: Sierra Wireless Compass 597 from Sprint
If you dream of connecting to the internet from anywhere you have a lot of options. The most common one is a USB modem, and we’ve reviewed them in the past. Since that time, though, companies have been hard at work at reducing the size of dongles that go with laptops and the Sierra Wireless Compass 597 is no exception, with it now being 70 percent smaller than its predecessor, the Sierra AC595U. As you can see below, it’s a little bigger than a standard USB drive. The nice thing about it, though, is it performs double duty. Not only does it connect you to the internet at high speeds, it also features a built-in MicroSD memory card reader. (Read the full post about ‘Review: Sierra Wireless Compass 597 from Sprint’…)

Digital Trends reviews the Helio Mysto and writes, “Snap is the camera function, and its 2 Megapixel power is fine, especially with the flash included on the back. Snap can also be accessed quickly using the camera button on the right side. The visuals are slightly above average, and the Mysto will automatically assume you want to send it to someone after its taken – by default a digital mailing screen will pop up for easy email attaching or uploading to a Flickr website account.”

CNET Australia reviews the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and writes, “We’ve been talking iPhone killers for the last 18 months, crossing less impressive phones off our lists as each came and went without making a dent on the Australian mobile landscape. Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 stands a chance to change all of that; forget a dent on the landscape, the X1 looks set to leave a meteoric crater. If the X1 can live up to the hype we’ll be asking if the next generation of iphone is the X1 killer.”

Hayfever? Try at-home photo therapy thanks to Health Innovations
As much fun as constant sneezing and itchy eyes can be, most of us who suffer from hay fever dream of spending an entire summer symptom-free. British company Health Innovations claims they can now make that dream a reality, thanks to a new gadget called Medinose. Medinose works by using to photo therapy to inhibit the release of histamine. Insert the prongs of the device into your nose for 4-5 minutes, two or three times a day, and you could apparently see a reduction or even elimination of your symptoms. This has to be worth a try: it’s drug-free, simple, and at £79.95 ($158) is a lot less expensive than weekly prescriptions… Via Shiny Shiny. (Read the full post about ‘Hayfever? We’ve seen how one can cycle around the world virtually using a hacked bicycle connected to a computer, and some genius has apparently taken the same idea and applied it to a Wii Balance Board. This group of German students who obviously have some experience with Nintendo’s latest success managed to use the Wii Balance Board to navigate Google Earth. The turning sensation pretty much resembles FPS strafing, but this is still a cool hack nonetheless.

Laser Etched Moleskine Are Reassuringly Expensive
$12 Moleskines not expensive enough for you? How about adding some custom, laser-etched artwork? One picture alone will bring the price up to a satisfyingly elitist $40. Add extra text to both the front cover and spine and you could spend $50, probably more than Hemingway spent on Daiquiris in a week. How on Earth can a custom etching company drill you for half a c-note for a notebook? Especially when a one man outfit can offer exactly the same thing for just $5 on the price of the book. We don’t know, but we guess it might have something to do with the spendthrift reputation of the floppy haired, frilly shirted dandies who entrust their sensitive, innermost thoughts to the “heir of the legendary notebook used for the past two centuries by great artists and thinkers”. Funcom has released the sales figures for the long-awaited and well-received Age of Conan MMO, showing 400,000 copies sold since its release on May 20. Of those 400,000 copies sold, the North American market accounts for half of those figures.

The developer is claiming this release to be the highest amount of pre-orders ever for an original PC game. This combined with 2.2 million hits on the game’s website over the last week confirms what we already knew: people are excited for some Conan-themed MMO action.

Kenneth’s Opinion

With the kind of stranglehold that Blizzard had (and continues to have) on the MMO genre with so many subscribers and becoming such an embedded cultural presence that extends beyond gaming, it is somewhat surprising to see these numbers.

Phoenix Lander says cheese while landing on Mars
The landing of the Phoenix spacecraft on the polar region of Mars using rockets to slow down its descent was a great success. In fact, the folks at NASA were able to take a picture of the spacecraft as it fell through the Mars atmosphere with parachute in tow. In the past, such a picture would have been absolutely impossible but that was before NASA had the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter snapped the first picture of its kind. It was the first time one spacecraft had taken a photo of another spacecraft as it descended onto a planet. The photo shows a bright spacecraft with parachute deployed. There is enough detail so that you can actually make out the chords which attach the Phoenix Lander to the shoot. (Read the full post about ‘Phoenix Lander says cheese while landing on Mars’…)
