If you’re on the lookout for a bit of outdoor lighting for your deck, this solar umbrella would be a nice way to illuminate a bit of outdoor dining after dark. The only issue is that with those bright and shiny lights hanging underneath the umbrella you’re going to end up attracting every bug around. Citronella candles can only do so much when they are fighting against 3 orb-like bug magnets. I would say that it’d be alright if you were in a screened in porch, but an umbrella kind of indicates that you’re outside. Otherwise, you wouldn’t really need one. Samsung has finally decided to do something about the SpinPoint M6 500GB hard drive by bringing it to the US despite being available since January in France. Unfortunately, there is a hidden clause in the entire purchase process - you will need to form out extra since these must be bought with some kind of accompanying hard drive enclosure. The USB 2.0 + eSATA version will retail for $310, while the FireWire 400/800 + USB 2.0 model is going for $350. Better late than never I guess. Man, who knew that LCD displays would actually come in forms other than squares and rectangles? AUO has a brand new one that comes in the form factor of an oval - something different for you to consider. As you can see, this will most probably be used as a tachometer on a vehicle, considering how it has a fuel gauge on it as well. I wonder which bike will this see action on first. Does anyone else know? Tags: DVD, lcd, cool gear, Ogg Vorbis (Read the full post about ‘AUO Oval Display’…)
A couple of weeks ago, I reported on a new small scale generator taking waste heat from industrial sources and using it to generate power. Today, in a similar vein, a new generator takes an item that is normally discarded from many busy restaurants and turns it into electricity which could then be used to help power the establishment.
It is called the Vegawatt power system and what it does, is take waste oil from deep fryers to power a motor which in turn drives a generator. It works similarly to a concept that uses old fryer oil to power diesel engines in cars, otherwise known as grease cars.

If you think that the battery life on your mp3 player is pretty phat, think again. Wolfson’s new WM8903 chip could further lengthen playback time by up to a whopping 120 hours - of course I believe that number is achievable only when the volume is turned down to the minimum and flash memory is used in your portable media player. Apparently handsets which ship from next year onwards featuring NVidia-based processors ought to see the inclusion of the Wolfson WM8903 as well. Who do you think has the fastest computer in the world? Bill Gates? A university? That one guy from the LAN party you were at 5 years ago? Wrong. The answer is obvious, the federal government.
Engineers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory and IBM unveiled the machine today and it’s quite a whopper. They’re calling it the Roadrunner, and for good reason. Consisting of 6,948 dual-core AMD Opteron processors, 12,960 Cell processors and 80 terabytes of memory, the machine can be used to do just about anything. But its main purpose will be to do some pretty heavy processing for the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Last week during the Computex show AMD unveiled their new solution for better graphical performance on a laptop. That solution is to plug-in a separate box housing a second, more powerful, graphics processor – something they are calling eXternal Graphics Platform or XGP. The unit on display at the show was actually manufactured by Fujitsu Siemens and called the AMILO GraphicsBooster, but housed AMD hardware. In a box that looks no more interesting than your standard router they have put together an ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU, 512 MB GDDR3 and a modified PCI Express 2.0 connector allowing for up to 4 Gbyte/s data transfer each way. The connector also has integrated USB 2.0 connectivity. (Read the full post about ‘AMD launches the eXternal Graphics Platform’…)
