SanDisk and Toshiba join efforts to build “3D” flash
by Nilay Patel, posted Jun 18th 2008 at 4:27PMWe first heard about Toshiba’s plan to increase NAND flash capacities by building “3D” memory chips with “pillars” of stacked cells in January of 2007, but it looks like the effort is getting revived — Tosh and SanDisk have entered into an agreement to jointly develop and cross-license 3D memory tech. New Nokia E-series phone goes… narrow?
The Nokia E series has been known for feature-packed offerings for business professionals. With the new E71, the Finnish mobile giants promise all that you would come to expect out of an E-series phone – the pleasant surprise is that it’s one of the thinnest phones Nokia has ever produced. As Nokia finally gives out details of its new QWERTY phone, you will see that the slim design doesn’t necessarily compromise on features – there’s still WiFi connectivity, HSDPA, A-GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, AND the smaller front-facing camera for video chat. While the E71 gives up a little on screen size from its predecessor the E66 – 2.36-inch QVGA screen, just a fraction of an inch smaller – the E71 manages to put in an extra battery to its package, giving it a relative advantage in talk time. Garmin Nuviphone Previewed at Singapore Tech Expo
The upcoming Garmin Nuviphone is slowly showing its GPS-enabling capabilities in short, PR-controlled environments, but it doesn’t mean that the peeks aren’t informative. In a video from Communicasia, the Singapore Tech Expo, we can see that the touch screen ’slab-style handset’ is much better looking than we thought, and the screen’s non-reflective surface makes the UI pop out. Then again, the clarity might also be the result of the three main oversized icons on the screen, used for phone, gps, and search functions. The other menu icons are available in a menu column that can be scrolled through by touch, and these include the music player, SMS, e-mail and other capabilities. CherryPal announces two-watt, Freescale-based cloud computer
by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 18th 2008 at 5:23PM It looks like the current ranks of green PCs are soon going to have some pretty daunting competition for the low-power throne, with upstart CherryPal announcing that it’s about to bust out a cloud computer that’ll consume a mere two watts of power. To hit that mark, CherryPal opted for Freescale’s new 400MHz MPC5121e mobileGT processor, and eliminated all the moving parts normally found in a PC, which means no optical drive and 4GB of NAND flash memory in place of a regular hard drive. Otherwise, you can expect to get 256MB of RAM, built-in 802.11b/g WiFi, two USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and a VGA port, with a “tweaked version” of Debian apparently serving as the OS. Japanese robot companies join forces to compete with South Korea
by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 18th 2008 at 2:33PM South Korea has already made its ambitious robot plans quite well known, and it now looks like a group of Japanese robot companies are doing their best to stay in the race, with them forming a consortium of sorts that they say will let them cooperate in the research, development and marketing of robots. Currently, that group includes Tokyo’s ZMP, Nagoya’s Business Design Laboratory, Vstone (makers of the Black Ox pictured above), and Tmsuk, each of which will apparently initially focus on “simple service robots” designed to keep watch on the elderly, pets, and children. They’re not getting much more specific than that just yet, unfortunately, with one of the com (Read the full post about ‘Japanese robot companies join forces to compete with South Korea’…)

3G iPhone in China Rumor

3G iPhone in China Rumor
Word has it that China Unicom could potentially be selected to carry Apple’s long awaited 3G iphone in China when August rolls around, but there is no solid proof as at press time. It will be interesting to see how Steve Jobs attempts to entice Chinese carriers to be a willing party in his rather demanding revenue sharing model, but hopefully an agreement will be reached since the China market is absolutely huge, thanks to the 1-billion plus population. Just wait till August for the full picture. Tags: pvr, speakers, game, buyers guides (Read the full post about ‘3G iPhone in China Rumor’…)

Targus has new laptop cases

All these bags share the same padded compartment that can hold up to a 15.4” widescreen laptop, along with the relevant pockets to hold other essential laptop accessories (of course, Targus would want you to purchase what else they have on offer). Let’s get to the nitty gritty of each individual laptop case after the jump. (Read the full post about ‘Targus has new laptop cases’…)

TV with arms?  BeoVision 9 ushers next-gen TV
A TV with its own robot?  While the concept might be a bit Blade Runner-esque, Bang & Olufsen says the technology will ensure rich and natural colors throughout the lifespan of their plasma screens. The audio and video equipment manufacturer recently launched the sleek, 50-inch BeoVision 9 plasma TV.  The device boasts of an Automatic Colour Management technology that adjusts the color temperature of the plasma screen to compensate for the tendency of TVs to feature a yellowish tinge in the picture after hundreds of hours of use.
