by Nilay Patel, posted Jun 19th 2008 at 7:03PM Mercedes-Benz’s current ipod integration kit is pretty weak sauce, especially since the new COMAND nav / multimedia system is so well done, but it looks like the automaker’s newest iPhone cradle will take steps to address some of the more glaring issues and also add some interesting new features. The cradle appears to finally integrate iPod controls with the main nav screen and COMAND controller instead of relying solely on the instrument display and steering wheel controls, and it will charge your phone while allowing you to make calls and listen to music. Verizon announced that they will roll out a 50Mbps down/20Mbps up service in all 16 of the states in which FIOS is available. It will run you $140/mo. Wow, 50Mbps is very tempting, and it seems that we’ve come a long way from the days when we needed much more bandwidth to fulfill the requirements of all the new Net-based services. I wonder if 50Mbps is a tad bit overkill.
Now if they would only offer it in my neighborhood (in CA), I could find out personally!

The phone is a serious statement from Nokia, being that company’s first 3G QWERTY device in the States, and the thinnest QWERTY smartphone in existence. by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 19th 2008 at 5:29PM As wind energy becomes a practical necessity, designers are scrambling to make the giant spinny things as visually inoffensive as possible. Some are small, some are off in the sea where we can’t be bothered, and some just look really pretty. In this case, Broadstar AeroCam developed this handsome horizontal-axis turbine that can be installed in any number of configurations and shipped easier than other turbines, making it a viable solution for those who don’t want to erect a giant pole or get involved in construction. AeroCams work on the physics of air lift — like wings on a plane — resulting in a huge amount of power from a small package given the amount of blades per unit. Plants are more versatile than we give them credit for, you can make clothes with them, build with them, use them as ornaments and if your really radical you can eat them. However up until know you would have even thought of making phones with them, and its all thanks to Samsung who have unveiled their new “initiative to be more nature friendly” which means they will making some of their new handsets (the W510 is the first) out of corn. Admittedly it is not just corn as that would be incredibly impractical, rather it is a corn based plastic that makes the casing. This technology is not new, it has been used in things like plastic bags on-and-off since the mid 1990s, but it is not till now that it has been used in such a high profile and relatively high cost product. by Ross Rubin, posted Jun 19th 2008 at 11:46AMEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainmentThe first iPhone arrived at a time that suggested Apple needed to protect its ipod franchise — but Apple delivered something that was much more than an mp3 player that could make phone calls. You probably won’t be editing any iMovies on it for some time, but in the iPhone Apple has essentially delivered Macintosh 2.0. It’s portable. It’s affordable. It’s connected. And it runs OS X, complete with its own breakthrough pointing device, your finger. (Read the full post about ‘Switched On: The iPhone’s iFunnel’…)

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 19th 2008 at 10:12AM You didn’t think NVIDIA would sit back and let AMD get all big-headed about their 4800 series cards, did you? Of course not. NVIDIA’s new GeForce 9800 GTX+, hot on the heels of the GeForce 9800 GTX, bumps some specs with the help of its new, more efficient 55nm tech. The results include a 738 MHz core, 1836 MHz shader clock, 512MB GDDR3 memory (1000MHz), and 2- and 3-way SLI support. If we have to compare those specs to the stock card’s, well, you’re just not a GPU freak like some of us. (Read the full post about ‘NVIDIA busts out GeForce 9800 GTX+ based on 55nm tech’…)
