Buffalo is certainly going ahead of itself by offering the first 8x Blu-ray burners in the world from next month onwards, thanks to the external USB 2.0/eSATA (BR-816SU2) and internal SATA (BR-816FBS) models. This is pretty whacked out since the Blu-ray Disc Association have not yet approved 8x BD-R recording and won’t do so by August, hence the official stance that currently available BD-R media supports recording speeds of up to 6x only. Well, I guess if you want to stay ahead of the competition, then picking up either Buffalo Blu-ray burner won’t be too shabby a decision to make after all. Leaving a power cable plugged into an outlet without even turning it on will still sip some power from the grid, and when you think about it on the larger scale, that will definitely affect your power bill at the end of each month, although the effect is not quite pronounced and more subtle instead. Designer Paula Oh decided that enough’s enough, coming up with a plan to prevent that from ever happening again - by unplugging them. That’s a no-brainer, but what Paula did differently was offer the Hang On Outlet that holds your loose plugs so that you won’t get unsightly cords and wires lying all over the place in a haphazard manner. It’s simple, and cool, literally. In theory, this would be a great way to cool yourself but in practice you might look like too nerdy. It doesn’t need any battery, since it’s solar-powered and what better place to get sunlight than a cap visor? It might kill attacking mosquitoes too… Brando is currently selling it for $10. Chinavasion recently unveiled their new MP4 player that they claim is the world’s thinnest portable media player. It even beats Brando’s disappearing screen mp3 player, in fact this 4GB CVSJ-1304 beats the former record holding device by a whole millimeter! To give you some perspective on how thin this 4.5mm thin device is, it would take 4 credit cards stacked on top of each other to be at equal thickness. It comes with a 1.8 inch touch screen, with a resolution of 160 x 128, supports media formats such as MP4, MP3, WMA, ASF, and WAV. Additionally, it comes with an FM tuner, a rechargeable battery and USB connectivity. (Read the full post about ‘Chinavasion claims they have created world’s thinnest MP4 player’…)

There’s nothing that I love more than covering new concept gadgets, and this is one of the coolest that I have ever seen. Introducing the ball-shaped PC from designer Apostol Tnokovski. This PC ball is a 6-inch orb, that is said to be the smallest PC ever made. This is assuming that it has been made. Some of these pictures that I’ve seen of it (including the one here) look a little CG to me, but these days, you can hardly tell. The PC ball has legs that fold out, and remind me of the droidikas from Star Wars: The Phantom Menance. (Speaking of CG) As for the keyboard, it is one of those laser keyboards that I have seen before on other applications. As for the mouse, it is a pop-out job that affixes to ball. Philips certainly has bigger fish to fry, although it is commendable that the company has taken some time out to come up with LED candles that feature color-changing capability. Known as the Imageo Wax Candle, the LEDs within are powered by a small battery (how else since you don’t see any solar panels attached to it…), lasting way longer than a regular wax candle and offering a gamut of colors. Oh yeah, you also lower the risk of burning down your own home while you’re at it. Tags: speakers, hdtv, hdtv, amps (Read the full post about ‘Philips Color Changing LED Candle’…)

Pretty much all of us have heard that we should really unplug our electronics when they aren’t in use. Several issues arise with that, one of them being later you have to search around for the plug and pray your cat didn’t use it as a toy. Well this design by Paulo Oh addresses that specific issue. They have designed the Hang On outlet to keep your plug up against the outlet even when it’s unplugged. Which means less hassle for you. MSI wants to keep things close to its chest, touting the veiled threat that the new Wind netbooks will have its warranty null and void if you attempt to upgrade the RAM inside by yourself. It will take a fair bit of computer hardware skills since there is no direct RAM access panel located behind the netbook, so be careful while you’re in the process of doing it as MSI certainly doesn’t think that DIY RAM upgrades are legit enough to warrant a, er, warranty violation. Ah well, I think most people will still go ahead and up the amount of RAM in their Wind netbooks, although this rather authoritative gesture might turn some customers off. In keeping with the theme from our review of the enV2, here’s another phone that’s not the iphone or the Instinct, but does offer similar features on Verizon’s network. The Samsung Glyde is a phone that has just about every feature you can think of integrated in. At first glance you see a 2.8″ screen. Once you turn the phone on, you realize that it’s actually a touch screen with tactile response. Upon further examination you discover that hidden underneath the screen is a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. It’s a phone full of surprises. The phone itself is on Verizon’s V CAST (EV-DO) network and it’s also very responsive OS-wise, so it’s a fast performer both on and off the internet.
