Michael Dell hints at smartphone plans in recent interview
by Darren Murph, posted Jul 28th 2008 at 2:08PMRumors of Dell playing a role in the smartphone industry have been around for what seems like ages, but each time the fire dies down, another can of lighter fluid emerges to get us all wondering again. In a recent interview with Om Malik, the bigwig had more than a few interesting things to say on the computing industry as a whole. Still, what intrigued us wasn’t the talk about being a founder or changing up Dell’s game in order to rebound — no, it was Michael’s remarks on the handset sector. When asked if there was a “desire” on its part to work with Android or Symbian, Mr. Dell stated that the company “is kind of working on that,” although it wasn’t ready to “publicly disclose” plans. Jointech Offers Sub-$100 Laptop
A company has successfully produced a notebook priced at less than $100. Jointech is offering its JL7100 mini laptop for $99. Equipped with 64MB RAM and a 7-inch LCD screen, the JL7100 is designed for "business, education, entertainment and home use," the web site says. The notebook supports software such as Wordpad, Internet Explorer, Paint and Media Player. With some calling the JL7100 a glorified PDA, it’s certainly not impressive by our standards, but at $99, who can complain? Luckily, there are other options, too. At $130, the NPX-9000, a laptop equipped with a 400MHz MIPs processor and 128MB of RAM, was hasty to call itself "World’s Cheapest Laptop." This notebook runs Linux and supports just about the same software package as Jointech’s. (Read the full post about ‘Jointech Offers Sub-$100 Laptop’…)

Richard Branson and his new space flight enterprise, Virgin Galactic, took a big step today in their quest to send rich tourists into space. They unveiled their WhiteKnightTwo launch vehicle for SpaceShipTwo at a huge press conference out at the Mojave Air and Spaceport in California. If that makes no sense to you, then let me explain. The WhiteKnightTwo is the plane which will carry SpaceShipTwo (the actual space ship) 50,000 feet into the air before detaching and heading back down to Earth.

While none of us at Geek.com were able to make the trip out to the desert to see the unveiling, plenty of other media outlets were and they’ve got all of the details lined up.

It’s not a stretch to say that Red Steel was one of the most anticipated titles to come out for the Nintendo Wii. It’s also not at all a stretch to say that there was a lot of disappointment once it debuted on the same day as the Wii. The game claimed to make a very big innovation in the FPS genre–1:1 motion controls. Gamers wanted to wield a sword or gun just as they would in real life, and Ubisoft (the game’s publisher) acted like that was exactly what they were doing. To an extent, the game delivered. For instance, a gun could be turned sideways if you were so inclined and aiming was pretty spot on. The swordplay was another beast.

Sanyo Katana LX Review - MobileTechReview
MobileTechReview has a review of the Sanyo Katana LX and writes, “Like the Katana II, the Katana LX has a VGA camera with digital zoom and can take photos but not videos. VGA camera phones are really outdated in a market that’s crowded with 1.3 megapixel and 2 megapixel feature phones. Even though the photo quality on the Katana LX is better than that of VGA camera phones from 2-3 years ago, the images lack in detail and color. Indoor shots look hazy and outdoor shots look murky. Colors don’t look bright or saturated and the overall colors look a little too cool. The Katana LX offers brightness and color tone settings, a self-timer, multi-shot mode and fun frames. Comcast has a pretty notorious reputation for customer service. Between throttling BitTorrent users and lousy technical support, they’re a pretty hard sell in the internet, phone, and cable game. Sure, they may offer a huge amount of channels, and internet speeds that blast Cox out of the water; but who wants to put up with a finalist for Consumerist’s Worst Company In America contest.

Oh, wait. Forget what I just said. Apparently, Comcast is doing something pretty sweet for new customers interested in their ever-so-thrifty Triple Play package. If you sign up for two years of the service, you can get yourself a brand new Nintendo Wii.

MobileTechReview has a review of the Motorola Z9 and writes, “Motorola’s cameras weren’t among the best once up a time, but recent phones like the Z9 have changed our minds about Moto’s camera phones. The Z9’s 2 megapixel camera takes really nice shots that are at the top of the 2MP crop. The imaging software does a good job of sharpening photos without oversharpening and colors are generally accurate and well saturated. Exposure is balanced and we were particularly impressed with low light indoor shots that came out well lit with relatively low noise. The Moto can take photos at a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 and offers 3 lower resolutions as well.

Alpine IVA-W205 Dock N Roll
Rock ‘n’ roll I’ve heard of, but Dock ‘n’ roll?!? That’s where Alpine is heading with their new IVA-W205 system that allows you to dock the PMD-B200 inside, offering access to a much larger 6.5″ touch screen display as well as gaining the ability to hear turn-by-turn directions straight from your vehicle’s stereo. The PMD-B200 Alpine Blackbird II and IVA-W205 currently retail for $500 and $600, respectively. Kinda reminds you of old school Voltron where combining five different robots end up as one gigantic model, eh?
