Motorola expands ROKR portfolio
Motorola might be bruised and battered from many directions, but that doesn’t mean they’re throwing in the towel. They proved their resilience by adding yet more handsets to the ROKR line (three in total), and the new music-centric handsets are the MOTOROKR EM30, the ROKR EM28, and the ROKR EM25, which comes in candybar, clamshell and slider form factors respectively. Do take a look at each individual handset right after the jump. ROKR EM30 One moment ROKR EM30 is a mobile phone; the next, it transforms into your favorite music player. It uses Motorola’s innovative ModeShift technology to illuminate the keyboard - red keys illuminate in music mode and a brilliant blue keypad appears in phone mode - taking users from talk to text to complete music immersion with a touch of a button. Sony has new Cybershots
Sony expanded its Cybershot line by introducing the DSC-T700 and DSC-T77 models, so don’t expect any DSLR class cameras in this post but welcome highly capable point-and-shoot devices instead. The former shares all the specifications of the DSC-T77 and more, and is perfect for casual shots, as it makes searching in-camera a snap thanks to the internal database structure and 4GB of integrated memory. Of course, that can be further expanded upon by using a Memory Stick, greatly adding to the initial capacity. As for the 10 megapixel T77, this is Sony’s thinnest Cybershot digital camera, featuring a 3″ widescreen touch panel LCD display, intelligent scene recognition technology, Smile Shutter and face detection technologies, high sensitivity shooting and in-camera image management. Service allows for anonymous calling between parties
If you’ve ever used an online dating service or if you’ve just chatted with someone online you know that the next step of talking on the phone can be a little risky. That’s because in order to talk to someone on the phone one of the parties have to expose their number. A better way would be to enable both parties to talk with one another on the phone without either person having to give up their number. That’s the exact service that is being offered BeeMask. BeeMask is a free service that works by having user’s register their mobile number with the website. If both parties are registered BeeMask users then all that needs to be shared is a code word to connect the two phones. Forget Monster Trucks. The next thing you’ll see stomping over dead cars down at the local rally will be this eight wheeled Segway, modified to an awesomely impractical width with the addition of six wheels.

The mod was done as a gag, by YouTuber Ksagal, and lasted just one hour before he pulled off the extra wheels to save the delicate axles. (Read the full post about ‘Video: Monster Eight Wheeled Segway’…)

FasTrak toll system exposed, could use a serious dose of security
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 6:39AMAh, Black Hat. How we adore you. Each year there’s always one speaker who shows up and completely undermines something that most people assume is rock solid. This year, our pals at Hack-A-Day were in attendance to hear Nate Lawson expose California’s FasTrak toll system for the security hole that it is. Essentially, toll transponders that are purchased and slapped onto vehicles offer up exactly no authentication, meaning that anyone with an ill will and an RFID reader could wander through a parking lot and lift all sorts of useful information. Think it can’t get worse? The transponders reportedly support “unauthenticated over the air upgrading,” which means tha (Read the full post about ‘FasTrak toll system exposed, could use a serious dose of security’…)

HTC to ship one millionth Touch Diamond this month
by Darren Murph, posted Aug 7th 2008 at 8:30AM We know how much those suits love to hit wild targets they set without any real understanding of the future, so we’re pretty sure at least one or two are getting the kudos of their life with this one. Earlier this year, HTC boldly predicted that it would move a staggering two million Touch Diamond handsets before 2009 dawned, and according to a new report, it’ll ship the one millionth unit sometime next week. With Sony Ericsson having all sorts of difficulties moving its mid- to high-end mobiles, one may wonder if HTC really can sell another million before December 31st. But we have all ideas the looming Sprint / Verizon launches will be all the help it needs to call i (Read the full post about ‘HTC to ship one millionth Touch Diamond this month’…)

Eye-shaped camera is shaped like an eye
by Paul Miller, posted Aug 6th 2008 at 7:16PM Some researchers at Northwestern University and University of Illinois have managed to build an eye-like camera that’s actually shaped like an eye. Sure, that sounds a tad unimpressive, but the real contribution of this project is the idea of electronics on a curved, flexible surface. The researchers have developed a mesh-like material that carries the photodetectors and electronic components necessary, and they say the resulting camera has a better field of vision than a traditional camera, in addition to conveniently resembling a human eye.
